It’s great to be a Grandma

I am currently in PA babysitting my one and only grandbaby!!! It is fabulous, I am loving it, I can’t believe how wonderful he is. My husband and I don’t live close so I don’t get to spend extended time with him, or see him change every day. I am just so happy to be here and wake up with him and change him and feed him and bathe him and get spit up on and even peed on. Only a grandma would like that.

However I have a dilemma I hope you all will help me with. As part of Thankful Thursday day which is tomorrow I will send my favorite response to this question a zip lock bag full of hand dyed scrap fabric. Some of it is just fabric pieces and some of it is fused scrap fabric. I usually sell these bags in my booth, but for you I will mail it off for you to play with. You will love it.

So here is my problem, I have been calling myself Grammy. My mom is Grammy to my kids and I really don’t want to be called Grammy, but I don’t want to be grandma either. I need your thoughts on this and some fabulous name for this precious perfect guy to call and think of me.  So let’s have it, your best suggestions.

My suggestion is "Grosi" which means grandmother in SwissGerman! ;-) or Oma is another suggestion.

I'm called Grandma which sounds like Gramma when the kids talk to me. My mom is Nana. My grandmother was called Grammy and my great-grandmother was called Great Grammy. A friend is called Mimi and an acquaitance is called Ema. Hope this helps! Congrats on your grandchild! Grandchildren are such fun!

When our first child was born, the grandmothers didn't decide on their names, nor did my husband or I. As soon as our daughter was able to talk, she named them all. One grandfather became G-Daddy. A grandmother became Me-mommy. It worked for us and was very personal.

A coworker decided I should be called Mamaw if I became a grandmother.

My daughter decided I was far too young to be called Grandma and that name was already taken by the "other" grandma that is already a grandma so she asked me do I want to be called Memaw or Nana I said I will take a LONG time to decide that as you aren't married yet.. she said okay. Either are fine with me, because they sound cute coming out of the mouth of babes :)

I am Mimi (short I)Gayle. My mother is Mimi Suzie. I don't really like my name being added but the kids don't call me that unless they are talking about me. They always call me Mimi or Mim.
My kids called my mother Mim always and their dad's mom Grammy. I have a friend whose grand children call her Grandy and I love that. My neighbor kids call their grandma Gee (hard g) which is also kind of cool. I wanted to be called Metzen which is Belgian for grandmother. That's what my great grandmother's name was although we all called Mitchie. But I was outvoted :(

Many years ago my oldest grand-d started calling me "Nanne" Paulette---! she would call her other grandmother "Nanne" Evelyn. We both were very happy about how it has turned out--easy for her to say and to this day my phone is still "Nannes" phone!

I second allowing your grandchildren to choose. My cousin had trouble with "grandma" and so her grandmother ended up being "munga". My niece and nephew had trouble with mamaw so my mother in law is memaw.

My oldest couldn't say Grandma and started saying Nana and that is what my Mom became.

When my son was born, my mom thought she was too young to be a grandmas, so she opted to be called Nana, and my dad became Bumpa, although now he's just call Bumps by all the grown grandkids.

Lots of great suggestions here - I'm sure you'll choose something that fits you well!

Ha! I had that very same problem. I too am a first time grandmother and had to come up with a name. On his papa's side little Luc has grand-mere and my mom chose mamma long ago for my children to call her. We are of Finnish descent and so I finally chose mummi - not mummo which I thought sounded older than I am.
On my hubby's side they had nanny but I kinda like nana - less goat-sounding.
It was such a hard decision and I know what you're going through. You look like a nana.

When our oldest granddaughter was little, she started calling my DH and I by the names that she wanted to call us. To her and her little sister we will always be Gammie and Paw, who eventually became Big Buddy (or just Buddy). She couldn't say the "r" in Grammie for the first couple of years and definitely couldn't say Grandpa. They call their other grandma "Grandma Linda", which is more formal. The other grandkids call me Gramma G.

Sometimes those little tongues have trouble pronouncing the names we assign to ourselves, and when they give you a name of their own, it makes a very special place in your heart for both the name and the grandchild.

I have heard some call their grandmas "gram gram", "grams", and "nanna (add the first initial)".

Oops! I forgot to mention....I have a special nickname for each of the two girls who call me Grammie, whereas the others I call by their "given name". The older one is Pookie and the other is Sweetpea. They sort of stand out in the crowd, as we have 7 "grands".

Don't be a Nana - or you could be confused with a favorite fruit. I hate the name MeMaw personally so I would never call you that...
A friend's kid have a Peeps in their life. I think I like the original choices the kids make.
My favorite grandmother was simply Gram. The other one was referred to as Mom's Mother after I got confused about her current last name when I was little. She had quite a few paramours as I recall. We had great grandmas all over the place and it was hard to keep them straight, they always had their last names added to Great Grandma. One Great Grandma signed her name GGMa which I thought was nice as a name, too.

We called my father's mother "Donnie" because the first grandchild could not say Grannie. I loved that she was our Donnie and nobody else had one. She was pure love & joy. So you may be lucky & this darling grandbaby will make you a dear name that says love.

I have no direct experience with this, but one of my sister's is called Nana and the other MaMaw. One of my sisters-in-law is called GiGi, but I think that's just by her great grands! Another sister-in-law is called Nanny Jules (her first name is Julia). My favorite grandmother was just called Granny.

I am late to the party, but very happy you've been enjoying the baby! Consider "Greenma" instead of "Grandma". Green is your best color.
